Submersible Respirometer
Developed a respirometer for measuring oxygen production (photosynthesis) and consumption (respiration) by eelgrass in situ in the local Morro Bay estuary. Consists of: sealed UVT acrylic chamber, submersible solenoids designed to tolerate harsh saline conditions, in-line pumps, oxygen sensor, and flow meter. Can be filled and flushed remotely from nearby boat; submersible to 25 ft. Used to characterize eelgrass productivity throughout the bay under natural conditions. Data will be used to identify ideal physical parameters for eelgrass growth, predict how eelgrass distribution may shift due to climate change over the next century, and inform management decisions regarding eelgrass habitat.
